Is it worth travelingfor a Tesla wrap?
We are the wrong people to ask and we know it, so here is the reasoning rather than the pitch. Sometimes the answer is no.
What genuinely differs between shops
Not the film. 3M Series 2080 is the same roll wherever you buy it, and any shop can order the color you want. The difference is entirely in what happens to it once it is on the car.
- Whether panels are taken to their edges or cut short of them
- Whether trim comes off so film finishes behind it
- Whether the door jambs are wrapped
- Whether stretched recesses are post-heated so they stay put
- Whether one car is in the bay or four
- Whether the finished car is inspected in daylight before you take it
When traveling is not worth it
If a shop near you does all of the above, drive to that shop. A wrap is not improved by the mileage on the way to it, and a good local installer beats a better distant one that you cannot easily go back to.
It is also not worth it for a small partial. Nobody should drive four hours for a chrome delete.
When it starts to make sense
When the job is large enough that the difference in execution is worth more than the trip: a full color change, a protection-film project, and above all chrome — the material that punishes an inexperienced installer more than any other and the one where you are least likely to find local repetition.
And when you can check the work before you commit. Photographs of finished cars, close-ups of edges and jambs, install shots rather than glamour shots. If a shop three states away cannot show you that, distance is not your problem.
What traveling actually involves here
The studio is in Ashburn, Virginia. Most projects run two to seven days with the car, so it is not a same-day trip in either direction — you leave the car and come back, or arrange collection.
We do not provide lodging, airport pickup, rental cars or vehicle shipping, and we do not arrange them for you. You handle the travel; we handle the Tesla. Anyone promising more than that is selling a package, not a wrap.
The bottom line
Judge the work, not the distance. Ask any shop — us included — for close-ups of edges, jambs and seams on a car they finished. If they have them, that is your answer either way.
